AEP 2027: Preparation Now Creates Opportunity Later
For Medicare agents, September is when AEP stops feeling like something on the calendar and starts becoming very real.
October 1 – when marketing for 2027 plans can begin – is right around the corner. October 15 will follow quickly, opening the Annual Election Period that runs through December 7.
The agents who have the strongest AEP usually aren’t the ones who simply work the most hours during those eight weeks. They’re the agents who use September to get organized, understand the changes, and identify which clients need their attention.
2027 IS ANOTHER YEAR TO REVIEW – NOT ASSUME
One of the biggest mistakes an agent can make is assuming that because a client’s current plan worked well in 2026, it will automatically remain the right choice for 2027.
Plans change. Premiums can change. Copays can change. Provider networks and formularies can change. Supplemental benefits can change. Prescription costs can change. And sometimes the plan that looked great a year ago simply isn’t as competitive the following year.
That’s why the annual review remains one of the most important services you can provide your Medicare clients.
DON’T JUST REVIEW THE PLAN – REVIEW THE CLIENT
A good AEP conversation isn’t simply: “Do you want to keep your current plan?” Instead, ask what has changed.
- Started seeing a new doctor or specialist?
- Been prescribed new medications?
- Changed pharmacies?
- Been diagnosed with a new condition?
- Moved?
- Become eligible for Medicaid or Extra Help?
- Become unhappy with a benefit or service?
- Had a significant increase in healthcare usage?
Sometimes the biggest reason to reconsider coverage isn’t something the insurance company changed. It’s something that changed in the client’s life.
YOUR AEP CHECKLIST
Before October 15 arrives, make sure you are ready. Review your carrier certifications and appointments. Learn the 2027 plans in your primary markets. Know which plans are leaving, entering, or changing your market. Understand the major network, prescription drug and supplemental benefit differences.
Most importantly, start organizing your existing clients now. Decide who needs a full review, who requires immediate attention because of a significant plan change, and who simply needs reassurance that their current coverage continues to meet their needs.
Good CRM notes and a structured review process can make the difference between an organized AEP and eight weeks of constantly reacting to the next phone call.
LET SEARCH & SAVE DO SOME OF THE HEAVY LIFTING
AEP will always be busy, but your process doesn’t have to be complicated.
The Medicare Search & Save platform available through Producers XL can help you organize and streamline your AEP workflow instead of bouncing between multiple systems.
Use Search & Save to help manage client information, compare Medicare Advantage and Part D options, review prescriptions, pharmacies and providers, complete Scope of Appointment documentation, store important documents and keep better records of your client interactions.
The platform’s Personal URL (PURL) tools can also help clients provide information electronically, including prescriptions, pharmacies and providers, before the review. That means less time collecting information during the appointment and more time actually helping the client understand their options.
And don’t overlook the CRM side of Search & Save. Use it to organize your book of business, document conversations, track follow-ups and create a repeatable AEP workflow. The goal isn’t simply to quote plans faster. It’s to create a better process from the first client contact through enrollment and follow-up.
The more you can organize before AEP gets busy, the more time you’ll have for the conversations that actually require you.

AEP can move quickly. When you’re unsure about something, don’t spend an hour trying to figure it out alone. Call Producers XL. We’re here to help.
REMEMBER WHAT CLIENTS REALLY NEED FROM YOU
Most Medicare beneficiaries don’t want to become Medicare experts. They want an agent they trust to help them understand their choices.
They need someone who can slow down the process, verify the important details, explain the trade-offs and help them make an informed decision.
Technology can make the process faster and more organized, but it doesn’t replace the value of a knowledgeable independent agent.
As you prepare for AEP, remember three simple questions before recommending an enrollment:
- Does the plan appropriately cover their doctors?
- Does it appropriately cover their prescriptions?
- Can I clearly explain why this plan fits this particular client?
If you can’t clearly explain why the plan fits the client, don’t hit submit yet.
AEP will be busy. There will be long days, changing schedules and plenty of unexpected problems. But you have resources available to help you succeed.
Use your tools. Use your resources. Use your PXL team.
Know your plans. Know your clients. Trust your preparation. Go win AEP.
